After a six-month long wait, Palm fans can finally abreast themselves with the much anticipated smartphone from the company -- the Palm Pre.

The phone was first seen at the CES in January; after a string of rumor launch dates. Now, it has been officially launched on June 6. It will be available via Sprint Nextel, Palm's official network carrier in U.S.

Reportedly, even though the hype of Palm Pre's launch could be equated to that of Apple's iPhone, the turnout at the stores selling Pre on the day of launch was just not the same (was much less). However, all the limited handsets that reached the marketplace obviously sold out the very first day.

The Palm Pre is expected to receive some serious competition from Apple's newest iPhone, likely to be announced tomorrow at the ongoing Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

The Palm Pre Features:

Pre is a slider smartphone that operates on the Palm webOS. It comes with a multitouch screen as well as physical QWERTY keyboard that slides out.

On the software front, Pre features 'layered calendars and linked contacts' that allows users to link various calendars and view them at one place in the form of layers.

Pre allows users to zoom in and flip through applications without closing them. It lets text messages and calendar appointments appear as notifications at the bottom of the screen, intended to cut interruption.

With the 'combined messaging' feature, Pre allows chatting and text messaging with a person in the same IM window offering continuity in al text-based conversations.

Further, it offers built-in camera and flash. Users can view pictures and watch videos on the touchscreen. There's also a built-in music player. Plus, the Palm media sync feature allows users to transfer DRM-free iTunes music, podcasts, photos, and more to Pre.

Lastly, you can use Pre for emails, connect to Wi-Fi and even access GPS. For additional apps, there's a catalog on Pre where users can download utility apps from.

For feature details, visit Palm's website here.

Palm Pre is selling for $199 (Rs. 9,431 approx.) with a 2-year contract and mail-in rebate in U.S. There are no rumors about it hitting the Indian shores in the near future as yet.

This is not a valid sentence: "Reportedly, even though the hype of Palm Pre's launch could be equated to that of Apple's iPhone, the turnout at the stores selling Pre on the day of launch."

Palm Pre uses Web OS and not Windows Mobile as you have mentioned in the report.

The Pre has webOS not Windows Mobile OS. This kind of error is unacceptable.
