Mobile Safari to access user location information with HTML 5 support
While the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is just a week away, more details about the features last beta of iPhone OS 3.0 is out. Computerworld's Seth Weintraub noted that iPhone's mobile Safari browser will bring Geolocation support with iPhone OS 3.0 update.
Weintraub checked the GPS-enabled webpage on mobile safari running on iPhone OS 3.0 beta 5 and found that it showed GPS co-ordinates of the iPhone.
In February, Google launched Google Latitude for all mobile platforms except Apple's iPhone platform. Recently, at the Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco, Google showed off Latitude working in iPhone's Safari browser. Safari browser would be able to access the information about user's location, thanks to HTML 5.
Similarly, Google Latitude will be able to broadcast user's location information, provided user allows it or not. Hence, Latitude would work as a web app and not as a native app in iPhone.
Finally, the verdict of making best of geolocation feature of Mobile Safari would lie on the GPS-based services and social networking sites making best of it.
