5,000 Android applications available for the platform as of now
While the Google Wave hogged the limelight at the I/O Conference, there was this little gem that most of us ignored.
The news is that Google, along with its partners, is readying as many as 18 new Android phones by the end of this year. Google also expects 20 new handsets to be on sale as well. The news comes soon after Google revealed that the Android platform is growing fast with a substantial 5,000 odd applications available for the platform as of now. Even though this is substantially less as compared with the iPhone, which boasts of 35,000 apps, 5000 is not a small amount! The increasing number of phones based on the platform might be pivotal in stirring further developer interest and result in more apps.
Another interesting thing is that the 18 handsets mentioned here are the ones that are being made by companies working closely with Google. Other manufacturers are already working on other devices using a basic Android system. Too bad that none of these handsets seems to be headed anywhere near the Indian sub-continent - as of now!
