Under The Hood

According to Google, it's under the hood that most of the changes in Chrome 2 have been incorporated. As mentioned earlier, the official Google blog post announcing the release of Chrome 2 claims as many as 300 fixes that makes this version of the browser almost 30 percent faster as compared with the earlier versions. The catch, however, is that, the previous versions of Chrome were already pretty slick when it came to speed. It is for the same reason that this 30 percent increase in performance is hardly "experienced" under real world conditions. The increase in performance can be attributed to the newer version of Webkit and the recent update to Chromes very own V8 Javacript Engine. Google has also made available this cool V8 benchmarking suite that tests your browser.

No points for guessing that other browsers won't be impressive with these tests. Opera, for example, scored a forgettable figure with the V8 tests.

An ACID3 test revealed an impressive 98/100 score, which is not bad at all. There are others, however, who manage better though!

What Next?
Now that Chrome 2 has come out of beta, the next logical step is Google Chrome Beta 3, the beta of which should be available in the near future. In fact, going by Chrome's past record, it would be a matter of months before we see the beta channel open up again. As of now, we have the developer channel version that recently added extensions support, an important feature addition that should see the light of the day in the next iteration of the browser.

The latest stable version of Chrome with the above mentioned features can be downloaded from here. You might want to share your views about the latest version in the comments section below.

As soon as Google Chrome allows "addon's " like FF does, let me know.

I'm coding a web site to w3c specs (using Firefox), tired of writing exceptions/work-arounds, (IE 7 required too much extra effort). I'm pleased that IE8 works well with the site, and now too, Chrome 2. AND FAST! The speed diff with Chrome 2 is amazing!

I think it's unfortunate that they didn't fix the link with Google Notebook. This is a feature from Google Books which is used extensively and remains broken in 2.
