What's the new device all about?

Amazon has launched the new, larger Kindle DX meant for reading textbooks, magazines and newspapers. Kindle DX comes with a 9.7-inch display, which is bigger than the Kindle 2 with a 6-inch screen. Amazon will start shipping Kindle DX this summer and has priced at $489 (Rs. 24,193 approx.), which is $130 more than regular Kindle costing $359 (Rs. 17,743 approx.).

Apart from the larger screen, Kindle DX is equipped with a 4GB internal storage that can hold up to 3500 books, documents and periodicals. Also, users can now adjust the width of the text from the six text sizes on the screen. Boasting a 9.7-inch E-ink display, Kindle DX offers 16-shades of gray colour. Sadly, there is still no colour support.

The built-in 3G (EVDO) wireless connection allows downloading content without any fees or contracts. It does not even require a WiFi hot spot. However, it should be noted that this won't be possible outside U.S.

The rechargeable battery is sealed-in and promises around two weeks of battery life if the 3G wireless data connection is used aptly. Kindle DX can be charged via USB and takes four hours for single full charge.

Amazon has added two major features in Kindle DX apart from bigger screen. The e-commerce company finally brings in the long due native PDF support which should've been there from the first Kindle itself. Kindle DX also incorporates an automatic screen rotation feature that rotates the display from portrait to landscape mode and vice versa. Also, the DX includes the text-to-speech feature which will be used with the content unless the content right holder has disabled the feature.

Why would anyone buy this when you could get a simple netbook for around the same price with colour and Wi-Fi?
