While the news of Research In Motion (RIM) managing to pip the iPhone 3G for the top selling smartphone in U.S. is still fresh  in our minds, RIM thinks it's ready to fire another salvo at its rivals with possibilities of an updated BlackBerry Storm seeing the light of the day soon.

The man at the helm of the affairs, RIM CEO Jim Ballsillie, has reportedly confirmed that RIM is currently "engineering" the Storm successor and will target the untapped mainstream consumer audience, which now comprises more than half of the 25 million RIM subscribers.

With the Storm being a hit in the North American market, the company now hopes to cash in on its popularity with an updated device. The Storm was born as a direct competitor to the Apple iPhone. It received mixed reviews from experts and did have its share of initial software and quality issues that were gradually ironed out. One gripe about the Storm was the fact that it did not come with WiFi. Hopefully, the new edition will address that issue.

Ballsille also confirmed that the company has readied a roadmap of the forthcoming devices without going further into the finer details regarding these products. Also, there is also no word as to when we can expect the "Storm 2" to make its official appearance. We won't mind some spy shots as well!
