New paradigm of search in experiment

Google has announced an experimental feature for searching similar images based on the search query. Getting the perfect image one is looking is a tedious task most of the times. Also, subjective search queries make it difficult for the computer to get the exact image, since images don't carry subjective meta-data usually. Check this out at new Google Labs home - www.googlelabs.com.

Google has rolled out Similar Images feature from its Google Labs to aid users to get matching image results based on their chosen result. To access this feature, go the Similar Images experimental search page in Google Labs - and enter any search query. For example, type "Apple" and from the search results obtained, click on the 'Similar Images' link given below each image to get more matching results.

Radhika Malpani, Google director of engineering, presides over image search work. She said that the technology works by "computing the visual distance" between two images then finding the closest similar photo from the image database. Search queries can be narrowed down by clicking on, for example, a green colored Apple and you will get variety of similar looking Apple after you click on the respective photo.

Try searching for more things such as a blueberry cheesecake, eagle or so on and get stumped by the similar images this new search feature can get you. Check out the Similar Images demonstration video below.

Google Labs has also introduced Google News Timeline for history buffs and news crawlers for browsing information chronological order. This novel feature organizes search results from bunch of sources, in a graphical timeline manner.

Variety of sources can be added along with thousands of newspapers, magazines from Google Books Search and Google News Archive Search. Further more, the timeline can be filtered by days, weeks, months, years or decades. Andy Hertzfeld, designer of original Macintosh software, is the chief brain behind the Google News Timeline. She said, "You can see how your subject evolves over time."

Google said it won't monetize from both these experimental features, not for the moment at least.
