"Good nite tweets. First big day in twitterland. Gotta get some shut eye and use the weekend for rebooting."
That was influential American media personality Oprah Winfrey after her first day using micro-blogging service, Twitter. She got introduced to the popular service by Ashton Kutcher who celebrated his winning in a self-proclaimed popularity contest against cable news giant CNN.
After Winfrey registered on Twitter on Friday, she had 244,888 people following her the first day.
There's buzz across the Internet about how celebrities like Winfrey and Kuchter are destroying the Twitter culture, or Twitterverse, by missing the whole point of the service.
The point of the service being and especially reasoning for its popularity are difficult to explain. However, simply - Twitter is one lengthy, open conversation going on among hundreds people from all walks of life - Users, or Twits, can choose to step in and out of this conversation.
Instead of bombarding people with an information-overload, the service is claimed to be the opposite of that as it lets people choose when they want to follow this informational conversation, and then get out of it.
In Winfrey's case, her non-fans claim that like Kutcher, she too is using the Twitter as a popularity platform where she would just talk about herself and not converse with her fans.
Well, how does it matter? The fact of the matter remains that such people can CHOOSE to follow or unfollow Oprah!
On another note, perhaps Dr. Phil should soon follow Oprah on Twitter.
Oprah's debut on Twitter is incredibly important - a truly significant milestone for our culture. It's likely that her show, magazine, book club, and other venues she used to inject herself into the world and create newer and better revenue streams were wearing a little thin. Now that she's discovered Twitter those slightly jaded viewers, readers, worshipers now have a new way to pretend they know HER and that SHE is speaking to them. In other words, they have a new way to pretend their lives have meaning. "Sorry, can't step out on the ledge right now...waiting for Oprah to dispense a new pearl."
