The Android Developers Blog has announced the release of an early-look Android 1.5 SDK (Software Development Kit).

This essentially means that work on the next version of Android is already on and that the kit is available for preview for all the developers interested in trying it out. The Android 1.5 SDK is "based on the cupcake branch from the Android Open Source Project." It comes with Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for several features, including soft keyboards, speech recognition, live folders, and home screen widgets.

Other new features in the new SDK include animated window transitions, home screen widgets, and accelerometer-based app rotation. The Web browser too has been updated with the latest Webkit and Squirellfish (for JavaScript) finding its way in. There is tabbed browsing as well!

The SDK, as Google has warned, is still an "early look" version. The final version is expected to be complete by the end of the month. There is, however, no word on when Android users would get access to the new software.

If you are a developer wanting to take a look at the SDK, here's where you need to go.
