Cellcos to block access to IMEI-less handsets

    mail share

Indian cellcos are on a mass effort to clamp down on users of as many illegal Chinese phones as they can. The companies seem to have agreed on a 10-day deadline to flush out as many illegal, IMEI-less handsets out there.

The move comes after the DoT (Department of Telecommunications) sent a directive to the COAI (Cellular Operators Association of India) requesting them to block access to illegal handset that either posses no IMEI number or have 15 digit ones. Legal IMEI are 16 digits long and are unique in nature. This also means that no two cellphones should have the same IMEI. This specialty of IMEI numbers was a helpful means to track calls and monitor illegal activities of a particular cellphone irrespective of the SIM card being used. However, without IMEI, tracking of phones has become an issue and along with it, brings a grave security threat. In many cases, more than 1000 Chinese handsets have been known to have shared the same IMEI number, according to The Times of India.

The cellcos on their part are on a mission to alert users with such handsets by sending them SMS and even calling them up to make them aware of the problems these handsets pose. We contacted a Vodafone spokesperson who has confirmed that efforts are currently on to reach out to as many customers out there and inform them about the directive and the impending blockage. While that certainly is a good move, it remains to be seen how effective this turns out to be. The companies also seem to have missed many handsets. But then, that's excusable considering the sheer number of such handsets in circulation. What needs to be done here is an iron fist policy banning the import and use of such handsets in the first place instead of measures like these, which seems like a last-ditch, desperate move.

All this seems to be an Useless activity When my genuine N73m was stolen, I provided the FIR copy and IMEI no to my mobile company but nothing was done to track and/or disable that phone. I am sure that phone is still in use . So just blaming chinese models is only the tip of the iceberg. the real issue is customer support which sadly is lagging big time in this country

True. I for one will believe all this hype only if it is backed up by action. It is ridiculous to expect a terrorist to only buy legal phones from legal outlets when so many places sell second hand (or is it stolen) phones.

Cant agree more with Prasanna, its bad customer service & legal system that is a bigger threat to our country than the one's posed by terrorists. (Btw, terrorist use satphones, they arent dumb like our DOT/Govt want us to belive). First the Police refuse to lodge a FIR, in my case they were expecting me to bribe them!!. Second, the Service provider will not bother to block or trace your IMEI no. even if you were to produce the original bills. Its the Branded Mobile Phone lobby that is behind this gimmick, they want to expand the loot as they are not able to do with the kind of stiff compition from the chinese peers. I will not be surprised if the Govt passes a bill in favor "A" phone brand as security friendly!!!!!!

How did they get into India in the first place I wonder if they are a security risk as made out to be ?? Were the Authorities aware that these were lacking the IMEI numbers ?? Strange set of affairs !!, the losers will be the ones who bought these ofcourse. The appropriate authorities which allowed the import should be penalized also, will they be ???

this is a plan to sell the branded phn in the name of legal phn or terrorist attack.the chinese phn r giving hard compition to these mobiles the branded phn r just making us fool in the name of technology..chinese phn gives us a complete phn in just around 3-4k..where as for a touch screen phn for branded it starts frm 8-9k
