QuickOffice suite making its way onto the iPhone platform
Post OS 3.0, iPhone users might have another reason to rejoice if rumors regarding the arrival of an Office Suite for the phone turns out to be true.
Apparently, Stephen Elop, the President of Microsoft's Business Division, when asked about the commitment of Microsoft to bring productivity applications (as in office applications) to smartphones, gave a slight indication about the probability of Microsoft's popular Office Suite making its way onto the iPhone. While there was no direct hint, answering the question, he cited the example of the Facebook iPhone application when talking about the evolution of mobile operating systems.
The addition of an Office application to the iPhone will definitely make it a more appealing option to many smartphone users out there, who have traditionally shunned it for its rather crude view of Word and other Office files - thus preventing it from becoming their main smartphone. This, at a time, when the likes of Blackberry Windows Mobile and Symbian phone users have the capability to view and edit documents on-the-go was not good news for Apple. However, all this is set to change with the recent announcement of the QuickOffice suite making its way onto the iPhone platform. With QuickOffice making a headstart, soon we might see an iPhone version of Microsoft Office in the Apple App Store.
The addition of a full-fledged Office suite to the iPhone will undoubtedly make it a great, flashy alternative to the likes of the BlackBerry, which is good at doing things the "royal" way. We will get to know very soon whether Microsoft does in fact plan to go ahead with an "official" version of Microsoft Office.
