Nintendo has launched the new Nintendo DSi in Europe today. The third-generation version of the Nintendo DS console, the new DSi, has a new svelte dual screen. Nintendo has made this version a bit lighter (7.5 oz) and slightly slimmer than Nintendo DS Lite. A bit more expensive, by $40 (Rs. 2,040 approx.), than the DS Lite, the new black or blue DSi will be retailed at a price of $170 (Rs. 8,670 approx.) in the US and Europe.

Nintendo DSi will directly compete with Sony's PlayStation Portable 3000 as well as Apple iPod Touch on grounds of gaming platforms. The DSi has two low resolution (0.3 megapixels) cameras, slightly larger screens (3.25 inches), and a SD card slot, but the Game Boy Advance slot has been removed.

The DSi has an ARM processor running at 133MHz and a RAM beefed up to 16MB as compared to the DS Lite having a processor running at 67MHz and a 4MB RAM. DSi also has WiFi 802.11 option for connectivity.

Jon S. von Tetzchner disclosed in an interview with us that Nintendo DSi will have more RAM size than DS Lite so that Opera can use the memory boost "efficiently." The Opera-powered Nintendo DSi browser would be available for download from April 5.

Nintendo DSi also brings along its own App Store called DSi Shop that will offer DSiWare - downloadable games and applications for the 256MB internal storage or SD card provided. The pricing details of DSiWare are free, 200 points, 500 points, and 800 points. Let's pray that Nintendo doesn't deploy region locking on the software for this DS iteration.

Nintendo has also packed in a music player on DSi that allows the playing of AAC music files with support for .m4a, .mp4, and .3gp file format.

Nintendo's Wii console will take a good one-and-a-half year to be officially available in India. So all we can now do is to hope that the Nintendo DSi will be available on the Indian shores soon.
