Products that get the Editor's seal of approval in 2009
We review dozens of products, month after month, but only a few stand out. And even fewer get our seal of approval. So here is a list of products that I believe are worthy of the honor from among those that we put through the grind in 2009 so far.
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST31000528AS 1TB
The Seagate Barracuda ST31000528AS is arguably the fastest desktop hard drive we have tested till date. The transfer speeds are blazing fast in synthetic as well as real-world tests. It comfortably managed to cross the 100 MBps barrier in several benchmarks, which is something I don't remember seeing before in a desktop hard drive in our labs.
The high density (500 GB) per platter results in a lower access time, lower power consumption and runs cooler too. To add to its virtues, the drive is a silent operator. We tried everything we could to find a fault in this hard disk but in vain. Even the price is competitive at just over 5.5K for a 1 TB drive. I was also informed by my reviewer that this drive is eco-friendly and 70% of the material used to manufacture it can be recycled.
All said and done, the Seagate Barracuda ST31000528AS is one hell of a hard drive and is highly recommended.
