Electronic Arts has finally put its foot down and refused to support online digital rights management (DRM) practices. The game publisher has dropped online DRM authorization for its upcoming open-world adventure game - The Sims 3.

Rod Humble, The Sims label head, announced on the The Sims 3 blog that the company has dropped the online activation process and will continue using game disc with serial for activation method.

Read his exact words:

"The game will have disc-based copy protection - there is a Serial Code just like The Sims 2. To play the game there will not be any online authentication needed.

We feel like this is a good, time-proven solution that makes it easy for you to play the game without DRM methods that feel overly invasive or leave you concerned about authorization server access in the distant future
."

Three months back, EA had agreed to offer DRM-free versions of Spore, Warhammer Online: Age of Reconing, FIFA Manager 2009 and Need for Speed Undercover through Steam.

As mentioned on The Sims 3 news page, the game is due for release on June 2 on PC and Mac platforms. And oh, EA also showed The Sims 3 game for iPhone at the iPhone OS 3.0 preview held earlier this month. EA might just launch The Sims 3 for iPhone as well on June 2.
